Whenever people ask me what I do for a living and I mention to them that I work from home, they almost immediately start exclaiming as to how lucky I am and how they wish that they could have that opportunity. However, while working from home most definitely has its share of positives, working from home is not something that everyone is cut out for. 
There are other people I know who have tried somewhat unsuccessfully to do their work from home. For many of these people, not having a structure in place is what ultimately caused them to fail. No matter if you get up at 5 in the morning or 5 in the afternoon, depending on what arrangement you have made with your employer, there needs to be a general understanding of what tasks you have to accomplish and a general and/or specific date for when those tasks will be accomplished by.
Working from home requires a great amount of trust between the employer and the employee. Obviously, if  an employer assigns out tasks to an employee to complete within a certain amount of time and the employee agrees to have all of the work completed, then the employer should be able to trust that employee and have absolute confidence that it will get done when it was promised. For many people who are involved in working from home, problems begin to arise when there is a lack of organization. For example, I generally try to get up around the same time each day so that I can have time to work out and fit  anywhere between 8-10 hours of work in. While I am certainly not required to sit at a desk within my home and work for 8-10 hours in a row, I still make an effort to knock out as much work as I can in one sitting.
When you work from home, it is not really advisable to sit down for a long block of time and work; but for many people, this is exactly what ends up happening. Because you are in the confines of your own home, it is sometimes difficult to separate work from pleasure. If you have the space, it is highly beneficial to keep your work space separated from your personal life. I am lucky in the fact that I recently moved from a one bedroom apartment into a two bedroom apartment. Immediately, we turned the second room into an office space set up specifically for doing work. However, depending on the workload that I have, I may bring my laptop out to the main room so that I can comfortably sit on the couch while working. It is simply a matter of preference.
Studies have shown that the overwhelming majority of those who work from home are much happier because they are able to make their own schedules, take their work with them wherever they go and not feel confined to a stuffy office environment. The result of this is that the happier the employee, the better quality work they produce.
