It was recently reported that the head of a large Wall Street firm, one that had received several billion dollars in federal bailout money, had just spent close to $ 1 million refurbishing the bathroom in his office. Obviously he felt comfortable doing this and rightfully so — he wasn’t spending his money. Taxpayers on the other hand, many of whom are losing not only their jobs but their houses as well and whose tax dollars are supporting this type of avarice, clearly had a right to be angry.

President Obama has just committed almost $ 900 billion to jump start the economy. That money, on top of the bailout funds that were committed as 2008 came to a close, sent the budget deficit soaring. In fact, when bailout plan goes into effect, every family in America will bear an additional $ 17,000 in debt. This of course is money that could be used to pay for, housing, groceries, or anything that a family needs to spend money on. Nevertheless, people are suffering greatly in these difficult times, despite these continued unconscionable acts of wasteful spending.

The really frustrating thing is that there is very little you can do about it. Taxes are taxes and you have to pay them. The government is a government, and will continue to spend your taxes as it sees fit. Citizens have very little control or leverage-after the election, of course-as to how those tax dollars are committed. And even with that consideration in mind, you never really know what will happen, because what’s promised on the campaign trail is not always what really happens.

With all of this going on, it is clearly time to evaluate your personal financial situation. Even as the government continues its amazingly and incredibly wasteful spending, and even as the titans of industry and Wall Street sharks continue to usurp and waste cash, you can improve your own financial picture. The only true security in recessionary times is through self employment. Find a business that is recession proof, and that features a turnkey system of making money. You do not have the luxury of going to Congress asking for bailout. Your only solution is to save yourself.
