Do you want to make money online, working at home, with just your computer? The idea is certainly attractive – no need to rent an office, employ staff or have a room full of goods which you have to transport to the post office and mail to your customers. But just what does this type of business involve?

If you want to create a part-time or eventually a full-time income using just your computer on a desk in the corner of your sitting room or bedroom, the first thing you will need is your own website.

If you have never created a website before, this may seem an impossible task, but creating a website is not as difficult as you might have thought. In fact, it is a lot easier than it was several years ago, because so many new tools have been developed to simplify the process. And the good news is that you can build a website for very little investment.

The first step is to buy a domain name, which will be the address of your site. You will want to choose a name which relates to the type of information, products or services you are providing. It should also be easy to remember easy to type. So keep it short if you can and do not use numbers or hyphens.

Once you’ve decided on a name, you will have to register it, which costs around $ 8 a year. Two of the best-known sites which register domain names are Godaddy and Namecheap. You will have to check if the name you want is available and if not, think of acceptable variations. If possible, it is best to get an address ending in .com.

Once you have registered your domain name, you will need a hosting package. There are many companies which offer this service and you should start out with a reputable company and inexpensive package, such as that offered by Hostgator.

The next step is to link your domain name to the hosting company. You do this by changing the DNS or Domain Name Server. The hosting company will give you the correct DNS in the email they send as soon as you have signed up for your hosting package. Then you must go back to the site from which you bought the domain name and navigate to the area which allows you to manage or edit nameservers. To find this, go to the area named My Domains or Manage Domains and look for Manage or Edit Nameservers. Delete the existing DNS, copy and paste the new DNS and save.

It can take a couple of days to complete the changes, but your hosting company will give you a temporary address and so you are now set up and ready to start creating your first website.

Does this all sound too technical? Do it the easy way – set up your own website in a few hours with this free e-book and start to make money online, work at home and gain financial freedom.
