Muhammad violated some 100 established customs (3) Imitation

Study of the pre-Islamic social, religious, customs, rules and laws is mandatory to acknowledge and appreciate the efforts done by the Prophet Muhammad who kept correcting anything wrong.

In this series, the Prophet Muhammad has disobeyed and violated some 100 established customs, issues, rules and laws that were wrong, false and flawed; as an alternative he has corrected and replaced them with some 100 well-known customs, issues, rules and laws that are right and valid up to the moment.

The third issue, Imitation of their fathers

Arabs before Islam used to imitate their fathers.

They simulated and reproduced the belief of their fathers.

When the Prophet Muhammad told them to stop worshipping the many idols (gods) that they used to they answered him saying:

This is what we found our fathers practicing
We found our fathers doing that
We found our fathers worshipping them. ‘
We found our fathers following a creed, and by following in their footsteps we are guided.
Surely we found our fathers on a course, and surely we are followers of their footsteps
We will follow that which we found our fathers upon
We shall follow the ways of our fathers
What we have found our fathers upon is sufficient for us and enough for us
That on which we found our fathers is sufficient for us

The Prophet Muhammad used to reply them saying:

What if your fathers did not understand anything and they were not guided.
What if your fathers had no sense at all, nor did they follow the right way
What if your fathers had no knowledge whatsoever, and no guidance?
What if Satan is inviting you to the punishment of the fire!
What if it is Satan beckoning them to the penalty of the (blazing) fire?

In conclusion, Most of the prophets told their pagan people to worship Allah and they denied them because they follow the guidance of their fathers!

The Quran concludes this event that happened many times throughout the history of mankind by giving us the dialogue that repeated many time.

A prophet to his pagan people:

‘What then if I bring you a better guidance than that you found your fathers following?

The pagan people replied:

‘We disbelieve in that you have been sent with.’

And this was the story of man than was happened and repeated many times throughout the History.

The Quran and the Imitation

The Quran encourages the Imitation of true productive and beneficial thing.

The Quran strongly condemn the imitation of anything wrong and harmful; and because this issue has very bad negative impact on man’s life, the Quran strongly condemn it in the verses  2:170, 5:104, 7:28, 21:51-53, 26: 69-74, 31: 21 and 43:22-24.

=========================

The Quran (Yusuf Ali translation):

2:170

When it is said to them: “follow what Allah hath revealed:” they say: “nay! We shall follow the ways of our fathers.” what! Even though their fathers were void of wisdom and guidance?

5:104

When it is said to them: “come to what Allah hath revealed; come to the messenger”: they say: “enough for us are the ways we found our fathers following.” what! Even though their fathers were void of knowledge and guidance?

7:28

When they do aught that is shameful, they say: “we found our fathers doing so”; and “Allah commanded us thus”: say: “nay, Allah never commands what is shameful: do ye say of Allah what ye know not?”

21:51-53

51) We bestowed aforetime on Abraham his rectitude of conduct, and well were we acquainted with him.

52) Behold! He said to his father and his people, “What are these images, to which ye are (so assiduously) devoted?”

53) They said, “We found our fathers worshipping them.”

26: 69-74

69) And rehearse to them (something of) Abraham’s story.

70) Behold, he said to his father and his people: “what worship ye?”

71) They said: “we worship idols, and we remain constantly in attendance on them.”

72) He said: “do they listen to you when ye call (on them)?”

73)  “Or do you good or harm?”

74) They said: “nay, but we found our fathers doing thus (what we do).”

31: 21

When they are told to follow the (revelation) that Allah has sent down, they say: “nay, we shall follow the ways that we found our fathers (following).”What! Even if it is Satan beckoning them to the penalty of the (blazing) fire?

43:22-24

22) Nay! They say: “we found our fathers following a certain religion, and we do guide ourselves by their footsteps.”

23) Just in the same way, whenever we sent a Warner before thee to any people, the wealthy ones among them said: “we found our fathers following a certain religion, and we will certainly follow in their footsteps.”

24) He said: “what! Even if I brought you better guidance than that which ye found your fathers following?” they said: “for us, we deny that ye (prophets) are sent (on a mission at all).”
